Hans-Joachim Beeskow, theologian, academic publicist and historian, describes the life and creative achievements of the renowned German poet and hymnist Paul Gerhardt. His commentary elucidates the enduring significance of the poet's work for the people of both his own and our times.

Über den Autor

Born in Berlin, 1946. In 1965 commenced studies in Theology at the Humboldt University, Berlin. Graduated in Theology 1970. Employed 1971 by the Märkischen Museum in Berlin. 1973-1982 Deputy Director of the museum. 1982-1987 Director of the Lutherhaus in Wittenberg. Subsequently worked as a freelance academic publicist and art historian. In 1985 gained his Doctorate in Theology in church history from the Faculty of Theology of the Humboldt University. A year later accepted as a member of the Verband Bildender Künstler (Association of Art Educators) of the GDR, as a specialist in Art History. After the reunification of Germany became lecturer in church history and Christian Iconography at the Leipzig "Institut für Museologie" and lecturer in Evangelical Theology, World Religions, Sects and Art History at the Janus Korczak Evangelical College in Fürstenwalde. The author lives in Berlin.
